Karen marching to save the Whittington

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
After a campaign from Karen Jennings and David Lammy, Minister stops bureaucrats review of local health services
Local people are today celebrating the news that the Labour Health Secretary Andy Burnham has stepped in and ordered a complete halt to the review of the Whittington, after a passionate campaign from the local Labour Party.  Karen Jennings and David Lammy have spearheaded this campaign, and have taken local residents, mothers and Whittington midwives to Westminster to make the case for the Whittington Accident & Emergency and Maternity services with government ministers.

Karen Jennings, Labour Candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green and a former nurse, said:

“I am delighted that we’ve been able to get this result for local people in Hornsey and Wood Green and across North London. I know first hand from my experience in the NHS what these plans would have meant. There was simply no evidence to support the plans Рit’s fantastic that NHS London’s review has been stopped.”

Labour Candidate for Tottenham, David Lammy said:

‚ÄúThis is a victory for the people of Haringey over NHS bureaucrats. Working together with local people in Tottenham, and across North London, we have saved our hospital, protecting the local services we all rely on. “

Labour Group Leader in Haringey, Claire Kober said:
‚ÄúThese are vital services that the community relies on. As a Labour Party, we are absolutely committed to defending frontline services and are really pleased at this news. ”

Lib Dem candidate reveals she would prop up the Tories

Karen at the Ham and High hustings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Karen Jennings took part in hustings hosted by the Ham and High newspaper last night to a packed hall at Greig City Academy in Hornsey.  Candidates took questions from the floor across a broad range of topics that really disclosed the differences between the parties and put the candidates to test on many issues.

On the issue of a possible hung parliament, when pressed about what her own stance would be if she was asked to take the Tory whip, LibDem candidate Lynne Featherstone conceded that she would “rule nothing in, nothing out”, thus confirming Labour’s message that for voters in Hornsey and Wood Green who wish to keep David Cameron out of Downing Street, a vote for Labour is the only choice on 6th May.

After the hustings Karen Jennings said,

“The message is clear, simple and stark:  if you flirt with the Liberal Democrats, you will wake up married to the Conservatives.  A vote for a Lib Dem MP means a vote for Clegg and you get Cameron.  Nick Clegg, unlike his predecessors Charles Kennedy and Paddy Ashdown, has made clear his hostility to Labour and his preference to side with the Tories in a coalition.  I believe this would be disastrous and an appalling prospect for the people of Hornsey and Wood Green who have rejected the Tories for the last twenty years.  The Liberal Democrats are no longer a safe, risk-free option.  The stakes are too high to vote for a Party that would support a Conservative Government.”

She added:

“Lynne Featherstone was in a difficult position, having to defend the position of her leader whilst fighting for a seat that has sided with a progressive choice for nearly twenty years. For the sake of the residents in Hornsey and Wood Green she should do the honest thing and stand up against the Tory threat within her party.  My message is clear:  if elected on Thursday 6th May and in the event of a hung parliament I would not support a Tory Government.”

Press release: Karen Jennings visits the Cypriot Community Centre in Wood Green

Posted by Karen | Posted in News, Politics, Press | Posted on 29-04-2010

Karen and Cypriot friends

Karen Jennings visited the Cypriot Community Centre in Wood Green on Tuesday, which serves the important Cypriot community in the Hornsey and Wood Green Constituency and throughout Haringey.

After the visit Karen said,

“The Cypriot Community Centre is a shining example of what a particular community can do and bring to the wider community. This centre provides social care, luncheon clubs and space for people to drop in and enjoy each others company. This centre has been with us for over 30 years and began with support from Haringey Council to respond to the huge and growing community of Greek and Turkish Cypriots. It is one of Hornsey and Wood Green’s strongest and well established groups. Their influence is everywhere: in shops, restaurants, small businesses and in our public services.”

She added:

“The Cypriot Community Centre is unique:  it works , nationally and internationally, collaboratively and in harmony across the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot divide and is recognised as a leading advocate for the peaceful and progressive solution to the divided nation.  The Centre also opens its doors to the wider community. It was once a school building and rooms and has halls that are available for events.”

After being taken around the Centre and introduced to the users and also to every single member of staff, Karen had these words of praise:

“All were warm welcoming and rightly proud of what they have – a community centre, run by the people for the people on democratic lines.  I was also treated to a delicious military size meal, several courses and all healthy and tasty!”

A warm welcome at the Centre

Karen concluded by recognising the support given by the Cypriot community to the Labour Party and said:

“Cypriots are in their hearts and minds Labour supporters and I know we can count on them on 6th May and they know that they can count on Labour to support their community centre and importantly to help to progress the cause in Cyprus.

I have supported many events at this centre and every time I go,  I leave thinking what an amazing centre it is and what warm, generous and hospitable people we are lucky to have as solid citizens within  Hornsey and Wood Green and across North London.”

Lord Kinnock to appeal directly to Hornsey and Wood Green voters in an ‘all to play for’ election

Posted by Karen | Posted in News, Politics, Press | Posted on 06-04-2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lord Kinnock former Leader of the Labour Party, Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate Karen Jennings, and Haringey Leader Claire Kober, will host a major public event for Labour supporters and undecided voters at 7.30pm Wednesday 14th April at Greig City Academy, High Street, Hornsey, London N8 7NU

Lord Kinnock is expected to make an impassioned plea to 300 or more local residents to return Karen Jennings as Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green.  In what he will call an ‘all to play for’ election, Lord Kinnock will remind voters of a Labour record to be proud of and the injustices of a Conservative Government.  He is expected to say,

‘For over 20 years the people of Hornsey and Wood Green have rejected the Conservatives; it has never been more important that this community pulls together and does the same again.   The risk to our economic recovery, to our public services and our progress on social justice is great.  The Lib Dems refuse to rule out support for the conservatives – only a Labour vote in Hornsey and Wood Green will stop a Conservative victory’

Press Release: For immediate attention of news reporters and editors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ahead of Mothers Day, the women of Hornsey and Wood Green ask: where will we have our babies if the Whittington’s services close?
On Monday 8th March, Karen Jennings, Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green, and Cathy Warwick, General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, met with a group of local mums, expectant mums, midwives and neo-natal nurses to celebrate Mothers Day and highlight the threat to local maternity services in Hornsey and Wood Green.

Local cafe Feast on the Hill, played exclusive host to local women who fear that the closure of Whittington Hospital maternity services will put mums, babies and a first class local service in needless risk. The Whittington’s maternity and neonatal units would close if the Accident and Emergency Unit closes.
