After a few days of rest and some much needed time with my family, it now feels well overdue to be posting my heartfelt thanks for the amazing help, support and hard work of the Hornsey and Wood Green Labour team over the last few months.

Election night was one of mixed emotion.  I was really sorry not to have delivered the Labour win for Hornsey and Wood Green Parliamentary seat, but delighted that the people of Haringey chose Labour – against the odds and in increased numbers Рto lead their council.   Huge congratulations are due to the Haringey Labour Council Candidates for their tremendous campaign and tireless effort.  I truly believe that the residents of Haringey will need the protection and values of a Labour Council in the face of our new Tory and Lib Dem Government.

So we have seen the Labour campaign message ‘flirt with Clegg wake up married to Cameron’ become a reality.  This can only mean that our work as Labour Рnow we are the only progressive choice in the country Рis more vital than ever.

Real Stories from the Doorstep

Great meeting today with residents at the Raj Kunj Sheltered Housing Unit in Wood Green. I presented what a Labour government and Labour council would deliver for the elderly along with the Labour candidates in Woodside Ward. We had a warm reception – many residents were concerned about the threat of a Conservative government and what that would mean for support for the elderly.

In contrast, Labour has got a really positive message for older people Рincrease in pensions, winter fuel payments as well as free prescriptions, eye tests and bus travel.  If we have a Labour Government, we will also restore the link between pensions and earnings by 2012 as well as introduce a National Care Service.

Thanks to the staff at Raj Kunj for arrangiing the vist.

Enjoy the bank holiday!

Labour campaign steps up a gear

Karen Jennings with Minister John Healey and local apprentices

A packed day yesterday, with the Labour campaign to win back Hornsey and Wood Green getting a real boost.  We had a visit from the Housing Minister John Healey MP, who came to see the results of an £85million investment in Decent Homes on the Campsbourne Estate.  And, earlier on, I unveiled a billboard poster which highlights Labour’s new NHS Cancer Guarantee and shows how this is under threat from Nick Clegg’s talk of ‘savage cuts’.

Fifteen years ago, public housing was in a terrible state, but the Campsbourne Estate has been transformed.  What has brought about this change?  A number of things, I think.  First and foremost, it’s down to the people that live there, who take tremendous pride in their homes and their community.  Credit also to the building company ‘Wates Living Space’ who carried out the refurbishments; they have done a great job.

Press Release: John Prescott in Hornsey and Wood Green Labour Party rally

John Prescott on the platform with Karen Jennings

Last night 200 Labour party members and activists packed out the Muswell Hill Baptist Church Hall to hear former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott launch Labour Party Candidate Karen Jennings’ campaign to win back Hornsey and Wood Green.

In one of the largest political rallies seen in Hornsey and Wood Green for many years, John Prescott gave an impassioned account of the Labour Party’s achievements over the last 12 years and set out the reasons why every vote will count in the next election.   Explaining why the Labour Party is the only choice for a fair future for Britain, Prescott said,

“We can be proud of the achievements of this Labour government. We have met and exceeded all of the pledges we made in 1997 and promise to keep delivering to improve the lives of all people. That is why the voters will have a clear choice between a fair future for the many with a Labour government or a change that would only benefit the few under the Tories.”

Save the Whittington March

Speaking at the demonstration

On Saturday I marched with huge pride alongside thousands of local residents, NHS staff, local politicians and trade unionists.   With one voice we called to for the Whittington to be saved.

I have to pay tribute to the tenacity and organisational skills of the local campaign group Defend the Whittington Coalition; who have been instrumental in putting this campaign on the local map.

So, what are the facts before us?   Well, the most recent documentation from the North Central London NHS Strategic Health Authority tell us that local NHS Managers plan to close the 24 hour Accident & Emergency Department at the Whittington Hospital.  We also know that a full public consultation is planned for the summer.
